Dental Braces

Dental Braces are devices used in orthodontics that align and straighten teeth and help to position them with regard to a person’s bite, while also working to improve dental health. They are often used to correct underbites, as well as malocclusions, overbites, open bites, deep bites, cross bites, crooked teeth, and various other flaws of the teeth and jaw. Braces can be either cosmetic or structural. Dental braces are often used in conjunction with other orthodontic appliances to help widen the palate or jaws and to otherwise assist in shaping the teeth and jaws.

What is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics is the branch of Dentistry related to correction of :

  • Crooked/malpositioned/haphazardly placed teeth
  • Improper Bites leads to difficulty in chewing
  • Anomalies in jaw growth
  • Proclined/ forwardly placed upper teeth
  • Inability of lip closure
  • Snoring (Sleep Apnoea)
  • TM Joint problems (opening and closing of mouth)

Metal Braces

Metal braces are the most common type of braces amongst orthodontic patients. These days metal braces are much smaller, flatter, and more comfortable than they used to be in past.

Patients of all ages choose metal braces to help them achieve straight, beautiful smiles. Traditional metal braces are made of high quality stainless steel or titanium. The three main parts of your braces are:

  • Brackets— Brackets are attached to the teeth using special glue that bonds them to the tooth surface and holds them in place
  • Archwire— The archwire is the thin metal wire that connects each bracket and puts pressure on the teeth to help guide them into place
  • Ligature Elastic (also known as the “rubber bands”)— Elastics, or rubber bands, are the colored ties that hold the archwires to the brackets. Your orthodontist will change the elastics at each appointment. Elastics may come in a variety of colors.

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces are made of clear materials and are therefore less visible on your teeth than metal braces. For this reason, ceramic braces are used mainly on older teenagers and adult patients who have cosmetic concerns. While they are visually less prominent, they do require more attention to oral hygiene as ceramic braces are larger and are more brittle than their metal counterparts. For these reasons, ceramic braces tend to be used more on upper front teeth than on lower teeth.

Ceramic braces are the same size and shape as metal braces, except that they have tooth-colored or clear brackets that blend in to teeth. Some even use tooth-colored wires to be even less noticeable. They are less noticeable than metal braces & move teeth much faster.

Clear Aligners

This is a system of series of clear overlay templates—called aligners—that have been generated by computer simulation to gradually move the teeth. This system is available to adult patients with certain orthodontic bite problems. The treatment includes a set of removable plastic trays, each of which needs to be worn throughout the day (except for while eating or brushing) and needs to be changed with the subsequent ones as per the schedule specified.

  • Highly esthetic
  • Minimal appointment scheduling
  • Due to the removable nature-Convenient to maintain oral hygiene

Lingual Braces/Invisible Braces

Having braces doesn’t mean you have to have a “tin grin.” Dentotsav also uses lingual braces, which attach to the lingual, or tongue, side of your teeth. Lingual braces are custom-fit for your teeth and treatment plan, and each bracket is manufactured for each individual patient. These appliances are well-suited for adults, who may be more concerned about the aesthetic nature of regular metal braces.

1) Metal Basic: Metal bracket and metal wire.

Since the bracket cannot hold the wire on it’s own, we need an external force in the form of colorful elastic or another metal string to tighten the wire into the bracket. Treatment results same as others.

  • Since force is externally applied, the pressure felt when the teeth move is more
  • Difficult to maintain oral hygiene as food gets lodged into the elastic

2) Metal self ligating:

While this system also has metal bracket with metal wire, it has a built-in lock system to hold the wire.

  • Hold on the wire is superior
  • Easier to maintain oral hygiene, no elastics
  • Comfortable, less pain
  • Faster treatment

All Metal Braces can cause ulcers and reddishness on the insides of the cheeks.

3) Ceramic Basic:

Tooth colored braces. Non metallic, but nothing to hold the wire in the bracket, so transparent elastics are used. These elastics become yellow due to color in our food items, difficult to clean.

4) Damon Clear Braces/ Ceramic Self Ligating:

Ceramic brackets with a tooth colored ceramic lock to hold the wire.

  • Comfortable
  • Nothing discolors
  • Easier to clean
  • Hold on the wire is superior
  • Faster treatment

5) Lingual Braces:

Put from the inside of the teeth.

  • Metallic
  • Highly esthetic
  • Mild speech difficulties

Adult Dentition

  • Crowding/ Haphazardly placed teeth: Difficult to maintain Oral Hygiene leading to Dental Caries (cavities)
  • Improper Bites can affect chewing efficiency.
  • Future Periodontal problems: Bleeding gums, Halitosis (bad breath), Tooth mobility (Premature loss of teeth)
  • Esthetics: Calculus deposits- Yellow teeth
  • Forwardly placed/Proclined teeth: Unnatural snout, more convex profile, posteriorly displaced chin
  • Inability to close mouth can be corrected
  • Spacing in between teeth can lead to speech problems
  • Confident smile, enhances confidence in personality

Mixed Dentition

  • Interception for spacing/crowding
  • Growth anomalies in jaws can be corrected in a non-invasive manner which may later require Surgical correction.
  • Treatment of malocclusion before it affects Child’s psychology.

Life with Braces

Your braces will be attached quickly and easily to your teeth, but a full day is necessary for the bands to completely affix. It is a good idea to wait several hours after getting braces before eating solid food. You may find it easier to eat soft foods for the first couple of days while you are becoming accustomed to eating with your new braces.

The placement of orthodontic appliances is not painful. Your comfort during this initial appointment is our priority. Many patients experience mild tenderness for 1 to 4 days after the braces have been placed. In addition, it may take up to a week for the inside of the cheeks to become accustomed to the braces. During this time period wax may be placed on the braces to improve comfort.

Braces are attached to your teeth with a strong adhesive, but may become loose as a result of eating certain foods. It is also possible that wires could become bent or broken without proper care. Since it is best to achieve orthodontic treatment goals with as few disruptions as possible, a well balanced diet is important to ensure a healthy environment for your teeth.

Patients should avoid foods that are sticky, hard or chewy. They should also avoid any food and drinks that are known to cause cavities. Patients should brush, floss and rinse their mouth regularly between meals.
